Summary

Abstract

In recent times, the development of Artificial Intelligence (AI) and Machine Learning has led to the creation of smart tools capable of understanding and generating human language. As AI becomes increasingly common in writing and communication, the need for tools that support native Indian languages—especially Tamil—is essential. Tamil, being one of the oldest and richest languages in the world, deserves careful and intelligent support from AI technologies [1]. The main objective of this paper is to analyze AI tools that support the Tamil language. Specifically, it compares Shoonya AI, Google Bard, and Bhashini, examining how each tool works with Tamil. This paper explains how each tool handles Tamil, highlighting their strengths and weaknesses, and explores how Tamil speakers can use them in education, the workplace, and everyday life. It also evaluates how accurately and naturally these tools produce Tamil responses, with a focus on sentence clarity and their ability to handle different Tamil styles effectively [2].

Introduction

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is changing the way people use and understand language. Today, AI tools can correct grammar, translate languages instantly, and even understand spoken words. These tools are especially useful in countries like India, where many languages are spoken. Tamil is one of the world's oldest and most respected languages, spoken by more than 70 million people. It has a long history and rich culture. However, many global AI tools do not give enough support to Tamil. Including Tamil in AI systems is important to protect its heritage, make technology fair for all, and help people in rural and regional areas use digital tools more easily [3].

This paper looks closely at three major AI language tools – Shoonya AI, Google Bard and Bhashini – and studies how well they support the Tamil language. The goal is to understand how these tools can help in different areas like education, government work, media and communication especially for Tamil speaking users. Tamil is a language where words are built by adding different parts (like tense, gender, number, or case) to a root word. This type of structure is called agglutinative. As a result, AI tools often face challenges in breaking sentences into words (tokenization), identifying the role of each word (part-of-speech tagging), understanding sentence structure (syntactic parsing), and analysing changes in word forms (morphological analysis) [4,5].

Tamil is written as a script based on ancient Brahmi letters. It is supported by Unicode, but special care is needed for correct display and processing – especially because most AI tools are built to work with scripts like English, not Tamil. There are not enough labelled Tamil texts or open-source datasets available for training AI. Tamil has many regional dialects and ways of speaking that vary widely. Words in Tamil often change form based on grammar rules, which makes processing harder. Literary Tamil includes rich, poetic language and context-based meanings, which are difficult for machines to understand correctly.

Ai Tools: Overview and Functional Comparison

This work focuses on three AI-driven language tools — Shoonya AI, Google Bard (Gemini), and Bhashini — each was designed to enhance multilingual communication in India, with significant support for Tamil along other Indian languages. While their core objective is to reduce language barriers, each tool brings distinct technological approaches, capabilities, and user benefits.

AI4Bharat-Shoonya AI

Shoonya AI is an open-source multilingual translation platform developed by AI4Bharat at IIT Madras. It is built specifically to handle translations between English and several Indian languages, including Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Bengali, and Kannada. Unlike generic translation engines, Shoonya leverages neural machine translation (NMT) models fine-tuned on domain-specific datasets such as government records, legal content, healthcare materials, and educational resources. This enables translations that retain contextual meaning and cultural appropriateness. The platform supports document uploads, real-time text translation, and large-scale content conversion, making it highly relevant for educators, researchers, and government services aiming to provide inclusive access to information.[11]

Document Translation

Shoonya AI is equipped with an advanced document translation feature that allows users to translate not only small text inputs but also complete documents without losing accuracy. This function is particularly useful for official records, research materials, and professional reports where maintaining the original tone and meaning is essential. The tool ensures that the translated content reflects the original message precisely, making it a reliable choice for academic, legal, and corporate communication [6].

Multilingual Translation

One of the strengths of Shoonya AI lies in its multilingual capabilities. It can seamlessly translate between English and a wide range of Indian languages, including Tamil, Hindi, Bengali, and others. This makes it highly relevant in a linguistically diverse country like India, where multilingual communication is often necessary for business, education, and governance. By supporting multiple language pairs, Shoonya AI bridges communication gaps between different linguistic groups [7,8].

Upload

Shoonya AI simplifies the translation process through its upload feature, which allows users to directly submit entire files for translation. This is particularly beneficial for those working with lengthy reports, books, or bulk text, as it eliminates the need for manual copying and pasting. The feature supports quick processing, thereby saving significant time and effort for the user [9].

Context-Aware Translation

Unlike basic translation tools that operate word-for-word, Shoonya AI uses context-aware translation to interpret the overall meaning of sentences. By considering the context, it produces more natural, fluent, and accurate outputs. This approach helps in avoiding literal errors that can change the intended meaning of the original text [10].

Intuitive Interface

The platform is designed to be simple and accessible for all types of users, including those with minimal technical expertise. Its intuitive interface ensures that navigation and usage remain straightforward, allowing new users to adapt quickly without requiring special training.

Domain-Specific Translation

Shoonya AI also offers domain-specific translation, which tailors the output for specialized areas such as government, legal, healthcare, and education. This ensures that industry-specific terminology is accurately represented, reducing the risk of misinterpretation in professional documents [12].
