Applications including the DIKSHA app, Khan Academy Tamil, and BYJU'S also have AI features to customize learning and provide interactive content in Tamil. Although these developments are in place, issues like insufficient annotated data, inconsistent accuracy of models, and the absence of AI education for teachers persist. However, AI continues to create new opportunities for Tamil language teaching by being more inclusive, interactive, and accessible, particularly for rural and first- generation students.
Impact on Teaching and Learning Tamil Using AI
The impact of Artificial Intelligence on teaching and learning Tamil has truly revolutionized the way this ancient and classical language is approached in today’s world. Tamil, known for its distinctive script, intricate grammar, and rich phonetic nuances, can be quite challenging for learners, particularly those who aren’t native speakers. Thanks to AI-driven speech recognition and natural language processing technologies, mastering Tamil pronunciation and sentence structure has become much more accessible, offering instant and precise feedback. Personalized AI learning platforms are designed to meet
the needs of a wide range of learners—from school kids in Tamil Nadu to Tamil- speaking communities around the globe— by tailoring lessons to fit their individual skill levels and pace. For Tamil educators, AI provides robust tools that analyze student performance, pinpointing common grammatical errors, mispronunciations, or vocabulary gaps that are specific to learning Tamil. This data- centric approach allows teachers to customize their methods to effectively tackle particular linguistic hurdles, like mastering Tamil verb conjugations or understanding Sandhi rules. Furthermore, AI plays a crucial role in digitizing and making Tamil’s extensive classical literature such as Sangam poetry, epics, and ancient texts more accessible (Ravikumar, 2021), helping to preserve Tamil heritage and encourage scholarly research. Interactive applications and virtual tutors enhance the learning experience by weaving in cultural context, traditional tales, and idiomatic expressions, which are vital for truly understanding the richness of the language. AI also paves the way for the creation of Tamil language chatbots and voice assistants, giving learners the chance to practice conversational Tamil whenever they want, boosting their fluency and confidence.
Multilingual AI translation
tools help bridge language barriers by offering translations between Tamil and other languages, fostering bilingual education and enhancing cross-cultural
communication. Plus, AI-powered gamified learning platforms encourage active engagement, making the process of learning Tamil not just effective but also enjoyable.
